Cryogenic lipolysis/ fat freezing before and after (Result straight after one treatment in our London Clinic)
Cryogenic lipolysis/fat freezing (sometimes referred to as trade name 'CoolSculpting') is a treatment that uses cold temperatures to destroy fat cells while avoiding frostbite to the overlying skin. It is based on a discovery that fat tissue can be damaged by cooling it to temperatures that do not harm surrounding skin, nerves, blood vessels, or muscle tissue. The procedure targets areas of fat that are resistant to diet or exercise, offering a non-invasive alternative to liposuction.
The treatment involves using a "cold applicator" that resembles a canister vacuum attachment to cool the targeted area to between 30° and 40° F and maintain it at that temperature for around 30 minutes. The clinical assistant then massages the cooled tissue for several minutes. The dead fat cells are absorbed by the body over the next several weeks.
Fat freezing/ cryolipolysis originally received FDA clearance for fat freezing treatments on the stomach, hips, and thighs and utilised a relatively large applicator. Fat freezing/ cryolipolysis was subsequently cleared for use on double chins, underarms, and fat around the bra line as smaller applicators were developed.
In an analysis of data from more than 1,000 people who underwent fat freezing / cryolipolysis, fat in the treated areas was reduced by about 25%, on average, and side effects were limited to temporary redness, bruising, soreness, and numbness.

How long is the cryogenic lipolysis/ fat freezing treatment?
The complete fat freezing procedure will last no longer than an hour. Please note we'll tailor treatment times to best suit your requirements based on your consultation.
Are the results permanent?
YES! - Results are permanent as once fat cells are killed, they are gone permanently. However, it's important to note that weight control is vital. If a large amount of weight is gained, the body will make new fat cells to store the new fat. With a controlled diet and exercise plan, results from fat freezing will see permanent fat reduction.
What happens to the fat cells that have been treated?
Whilst liposuction removes fat, cryogenic lipolysis freezes excess fat cells under the skin. The frozen fat cells crystallise and die. They are naturally flushed out of the body after being dissolved by the lymphatic system. The treated area becomes smaller in the following weeks as this occurs. Skin and the surrounding tissues are unaffected by fat freezing as it only targets fat cells. Due to its non-surgical and non-invasive nature, it's being turned to as an alternative to liposuction.
Am I a good candidate for cryogenic lipolysis / fat freezing?
Great news! fat freezing has been shown to work equally for both men and women. If you're within 10-15 kg of your ideal weight and store stubborn fat that you've struggled with, fat freezing may be the solution. As you cannot spot reduce with exercise, fat freezing is great as its a highly targeted procedure.
What are the side effects?
Side effects are minimal and most patients are able to return to work and resume other regular activities the very same day. Please be aware you can expect to see temporary mild redness, tingling, tenderness, and possible soreness. The majority settles within 48 hours.

Although the number of fat cells is reduced during fat freezing, clients are still advised to live a healthy lifestyle as this will help maintain their results. Furthermore, it's essential that you drink 2-3 litres of water a day to flush the dead fat cells out of your body. It is also important to exercise regularly as this will assist in the metabolism of the dead fat cells.
